What Sniff Test can and cannot do

Can do

  • Check messages, links, screenshots, job offers and public X accounts
  • Give a result with the warning signs found and a recommended next step
  • Read the public content of a link to see where it leads
  • Review a large number of an X account's public posts and report patterns

Cannot do

  • Reply to a sender, or block, report or post anything on your behalf
  • Log in, fill in forms, download files or enter details on a website
  • Accept passwords, one-time codes, PINs or card numbers
  • Confirm who owns an account, see private profiles, messages or followers, or prove that something is safe or unlawful
  • Recover money, or give legal or financial advice
  • Guarantee a result. An assessment can be wrong

Sample results

Three examples of how a result looks. The messages are invented for illustration. They are not real checks and are not from real people.

Likely a scam
Example, not a real check
“Your bank account will be blocked today. Update your KYC now at kyc-update.example/verify and send us the OTP you receive.”

Why this result

  • It creates urgency with a threat of blocking the account.
  • It asks for a one-time code, which a genuine bank never asks for.
  • The link does not belong to a bank website you already know.

What to do next: Do not open the link or share any code. Contact your bank through its official app or phone number.

Suspicious
Example, not a real check
“We are hiring part-time online reviewers. Earn ₹3,000 a day from home. Message us on WhatsApp to start today.”

Why this result

  • The pay offered is unusually high for the work described.
  • It moves the conversation to a private chat straight away.
  • It does not name the company or the person offering the work.

What to do next: Do not pay any fee or share documents. Find the employer yourself and confirm the offer with them.

No warning signs found
Example, not a real check
“Your appointment is confirmed for Thursday at 4 pm. Please reply STOP if you wish to cancel.”

Why this result

  • It has no link, payment request or request for a code.
  • The details are ordinary and do not pressure you.
  • This does not prove that the message is genuine.

What to do next: If you were not expecting it, confirm with the sender through a number you already trust.
